AFTER being shut out by Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) on Sunday, shuttlers Hj Esa Kula and Hj Rosmadee Hj Md Daud from Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) were hoping to avoid that same embarrassment again at the Inter-Ministry Sports Festival last night.
The game was played in the multi-purpose hall of the Youth Centre in the capital.
With Hj Esa stalking the back-court and Hj Rosmadee up front, the pair started well against the team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MoFAT), racing to a 10-2 in the first set.
Unfortunately for MoFAT, they failed to apply any pressure during the opening salvo, subsequently losing it 21-7.
The second was more of the same for MoFAT. Hj Esa's used his pinpoint overheads to kiss the corners, driving MCYS to an 11-0 lead at the break.
MoFAT were given a brief respite as MCYS started sluggishly. However it wasn't to last. MCYS cruised the rest of the way, winning the set 21-7, and with it the match.
"The way they played, it can be seen that they lacked regular training. Maybe they were just players that were brought in to just fill in the blanks," Hj Esa said after the match.
That is obviously not the case for the 47-year-old who has been playing badminton at least three times a week since his teenage years.
"It started off as just a hobby and I have been active in the sport since then. I have never had any formal training though," said Hj Esa.
Hj Esa is a big fan of the annual inter-ministry competition. "(Because of this) we can not only strengthen ties between the ministries, but also get to know each other better through the competition."
The women's teams will square off tonight.
MCYS will face the Ministry of Defence in Group A action while in Group B, the Prime Minister's Office will go against the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Ministry of Education will attempt to teach the Ministry of Finance how to play badminton in Group C and Group D will see MCYS square off against the Ministry of Development.
All matches start at 8 pm.The Brunei Times
