Brunei Tourism rule at pro-am event

BRUNEI Tourism made it an Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters pro-am to remember when they won yesterday's competition after carding a 97 at the Empire Hotel & Country Club.

South African Chris William joined forces with Danny Quah, Lim Chai Hock and Maj Gen Pg Dato Abidin Pg Ahmad for the win.

With Brunei Tourism Board the biggest local stakeholders in the event, they will no doubt be pleased with their finish in the competition especially since another one of their teams placed second in the field of 27 flights.

Filipino Frankie Minoza, Hj Saiful Pehin Ahmad, Yakub Jumat and Yakib Jumat ended as runners-up after finishing with a 95.

Team DST, comprised of American Peter Teravainen, Sarinah Masri, Joan Chin and Sie Lu, finished third with a 93.

Entering four teams altogether, the other two Brunei Tourism teams led by South African Bertus Smit and tournament favourite Sam Torrance finished seventh and 10th respectively.

The curtain raiser for the US$400,000 tournament which tees-off today, titleholder Mike Cunning looks on course to defend his title after winning Wednesday's pro-am which was contested with a different system.

American Cunning, Mohd Yusri Mat Isa, Hj Amir Hj Osman and Pg Abd Rahman Pg Hj Tuah topped the competition after finishing with a 124.

Japanese Seiji Ebihara, Sylvester Yong, Hj Adam Leslie Abdullah and Hj Yaakub Hj Jumat carded a 125 to finish second while Ireland's Dennis Sullivan, Ken Kho, Glen Canterford and Ian Dawson scored a 128 to grab third.

The second time the European Senior Tour has hosted the Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters, the event which will be televised on sports channels such as Sky Sports and ESPN is aimed at encouraging sports tourism in Brunei.

Presented by the Stapleford Forum, its CEO Shuif Hussain on Tuesday said that the company used its contacts to bring celebrities to Brunei to play in the pro-am and raise the tournament's profile.

Among the famous names who competed in the pro-am were Formula 1 legend Nigel Mansell, 1985 World Snooker Championship winner Dennis Taylor, ex-Chelsea FC defender Ken Monkou and Ashes-winning England captain Michael Vaughan.
