Education Minister goes 'back to basics' in Menglait

THE Minister of Education yesterday during a visit to Menglait Secondary School reiterated the need for schools in the country to continue improving the quality of education by preparing comprehensive academic programmes in order to improve the education performance of students inclusively.

In a briefing session, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Rahman Dato Setia Hj Mohamed Taib told officers of the school to, most importantly, make efforts to diversify methods of teaching that are more effective and interesting to catch the interests of the students.

The minister also suggested the school to continue making efforts in overcoming the weaknesses of the students in each of their subjects, particularly core subjects.

Pehin Dato Hj Abd Rahman said that continuous guidance carried out at an early stage by school teachers and personnel could ensure that students are able to obtain relevant skills and hence, attain good results at public examinations.

The school officials said that they have not faced any difficulties with the present education system and found that the new learning technique, which requires students to carry out more research and revision, gained more interest among the students.

The minister assured the school officials that the Ministry of Education will always provide assistance to overcome problems and shortages that the school might experience, whether in infrastructure or the facilitation of teaching and learning.

According to a statement from the ministry, Menglait Secondary School initially caught the interest of the minister as a school that has always been badly affected by floods during the rainy season.

In light of this, the minister said that he hopes any upgrading works carried out by the school will take this factor into consideration.

Towards the end of the visit, the delegation visited the newly constructed block at the school, which was recently completed.

The newly constructed block will accommodate several classrooms and will be used starting early this year.

Menglait Secondary School currently has 1,025 students with 108 teaching workforce.
