Making doing business easier

Government agencies concerned have made great strides in slashing the number of steps and days it takes to start a business in Brunei Darussalam.

The Sultanate has already cut the number of "doing business" procedures involving the Registry of Companies (ROC) from six to two.

Steps involving the ROC that initially required 43 days to complete now require only 23 days, according to Vincent Cheong, chief executive officer of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB).

He said the board has been working with the ROC and the Lands Department to expedite the process of starting a business in Brunei in an effort to improve the Sultanate's ranking in the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business report.

Challenging standards of Bruneian hospitality

Maintaining quality service and providing quality products is essential to differentiate one's company from others in the small pie that is Brunei's hospitality industry, said a top executive from a local company involved in the sector.

Ada Ang, a-Fontane's operations director, said the local company is trying their best to proactively raise the industry standards in Brunei, "because in this industry we are, as in most things, always far behind (compared) with the rest of the world".

"So what we do is we try to get some new packaging ideas and try to introduce it to the market,... (as well as) using food grade products, using halal compliant products, and of course (addressing) environmental issues as well."
