Federer’s a fan of Tom boy
ROGER FEDERER believes the new kid on the block is ready to take tennis by storm.
Aussie ace Bernard Tomic, 18, plays in the last 16 today after stunning world No 5 Robin Soderling in straight sets on Saturday.
He faces Belgian Xavier Malisse on Court 18 and has a great chance of making it into his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final.
Tomic's fellow bright young things Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov and Ryan Harrison have already packed their bags after early exits.
But Federer, who clashes today with 18th seed Mikhail Youzhny, likes what he has seen from the latest Wizard of Oz.
Tomic is currently 158th in the world.
Yet Swiss legend Federer, 29, said: "Tomic is lower in the rankings but it seems like he's making a run.
"It's good for tennis if new generations move in. When you're at practice, you see how well these guys are hitting the ball.
"And the next generation is pushing through, too, which is going to keep the 21-year-olds aware of that and wanting to improve.
"When I was that age, I thought it was stressful to some degree - everyone is expecting you to break through.
"And if you don't break through, people always ask, 'What's wrong with you man?'
"These are interesting times for tennis right now."
