BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - THE Cambodian national Under-21 football team are the first side to touch down in the Sultanate when they arrived in the early hours today for the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT).

Cambodia are drawn in Group B with Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Timor Leste.

The team have been training hard since the Christmas holidays under South Korean Lee Tae-hoon for the Feb 25-March 9 biennial competition.

They have had plenty of preparations which included two friendly matches against South Korean sideUlsan University late last month.

They also played a friendly against the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games champions, Malaysia, which they lost 1-0 on Jan 14.

Cambodia then managed a 5-1 victory over Cambodian League club, Boeung Ket Rubber Field, but lost 1-0 to Build Bright United.

The U-21 side were held against two of the more established top-flight Cambodian league teams, PreahKhan Reach, and Naga Corp.

Cambodia's opening match will be against hosts Brunei on Feb 25 right after the opening ceremony at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

They finished bottom of their group in the inaugural edition in 2002, but advanced to the final four in their next appearance in 2007 where they were hammered by eventual champions Thailand 10-1.

The winners for this year's HBT will be awarded $20,000, with the runners-up getting $10,000 and the third-place side winning $5,000.

New champions will be crowned this year after it was announced last week that holders Thailand had pulled out of the competition due to unforeseen circumstances.
