Brunei For World Takraw Meet
The Brunei sepak takraw team before leaving for Indonesia yesterday
Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Darussalam sepak takraw team left for Palembang, Indonesia yesterday to participate in the World Super Series Sepak Takraw Tournament from Feb 20-26.
A sending-off ceremony and handing over of the national flag was held at the Brunei International Airport before their departure.
The President of Pestabaru, Pengiran Haji Alihassan bin Pengiran Dato Seri Laila Jasa Haji Abas handed over the national flag to head of contingent, Haji Zaman bin Haji Samat.
The Brunei Darussalam sepak takraw team comprised of three officers and five players. The players were selected by Youth and Sports Department based on their achievements and capabilities.
The five players also represented Brunei in the Borneo Games in Samarinda, Indonesia where they won the gold medal.
According to Haji Zaman: "We hope the athletes will show their excellent sportsmanship as what they have done during the Borneo Games last year."
"Brunei is one of ISTAF members and ranked 9. We are looking forward to up our ranking to at least 6 or 7," he added.
Beside Brunei, the tournament will also be participated by Thailand, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, USA, Chinese Taipei, China, India and Indonesia.
The first qualification round was held in Thailand while the second round will take place in Palembang. The third and fourth qualification rounds will be held in Singapore in May and Thailand in July respectively.
