Written by Jimi-Ha on 22 February 2012.

Bandar Seri Begawan - A series of seminars for 'O' Level and 'A' Level students were held at the Meeting Room on the fourth floor of the Rizqun International Hotel, organised by the British Council as part of the ongoing Education UK 2012 Exhibition.

A total of four seminars regarding different aspects of study in the UK, including studying in Scotland and applying for postgraduate study in the UK, were presented by lecturers from across the UK to give local students a clearer persactive on what to expect and what subjects and results they need to achieve to be eligible to apply for study abroad.

The first seminar, presented by Dr Susan Matthews of the University of East Anglia, consisted of an introduction to the variety of science courses available in the UK and the importance of accreditation by learned societies.

Dr Susan Matthews elaborated on the choices between three-year BSc degrees and four-year integrated Master's degrees, such as the MChem. Opportunities to spend part of their chosen course on an industrial placement or in an overseas country were also touched upon by Dr Matthews.

The following seminar, regarding studying in Scotland, was led by Helen- Marie Clayton of the University of Glasgow, who encouraged students to study in Scotland and gave them an overview of Scottish universities offering undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and additionally, an overview of student life, costs and employment opportunities within Scotland.

Dr Neil Storey of the University of Warwick presented the penultimate seminar, entitled 'Engineering in the UK', with the intentions of giving the students a better understanding on the subject and enabling them to make better informed decisions when considering their options, with majority of Engineering students having little knowledge on the subject prior to taking up the course at the university.

The topics discussed during the presentation included why one should study engineering, the nature of engineering and a list of engineering degrees available.

In the final seminar, Emma Gutteridge of King's College London provided the audience with a comprehensive guide to postgraduate degrees in the UK, including the features and benefits of studying in the UK, how to apply for the various programmes on offer and what prospective applicants should include in their applications.
