BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - NEW technology startup MeSixty Sdn Bhd yesterday closed its first major venture capital (VC) financing to support further expansion and development of its geo-social indexing technology.
MeSixty has clinched a deal with Singapore-based Accel-X Pte Ltd for the award of working capital that will allow the development of its application aimed at markets outside Brunei.
"This funding will allow us to accelerate our development in order to enter the arena with a unique product and solid value-proposition," saidKeeran Janin, chief executive officer and co-founder of MeSixty.
During the signing ceremony held at the iCentre yesterday, Keeran revealed that the funds will be used for the development of a range of innovative applications built around MeSixty's technology which indexes and analyses geo-social media; social media created with mobile devices and tagged to locations.

"This latest round of financing demonstrates that the investment community and the business worldrecognise the value of knowing what people think and what people have shared about places around you. We are determined more than ever to become the leader in this," he added.
He said mobile devices are fast becoming the primary means of accessing social networks, presenting huge opportunities for many companies including MeSixty.
"With that in mind, we can build some kind of technology that can be implemented and integrated with lots of different types of applications such as advertising, sightseeing or tour guides," he said.
"This presents a very large opportunity for us to create the kind of technology that could make a big impact in the way the people can see the world around them," he added.
Keeran said that startup MeSixty, which was formed earlier this year, is a spin-off from a project that was developed under the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB)'s Local Enterprise Applications & Products (Leap) grant scheme.
"From this Leap grant, we've been able to develop this technology, and now we're at the stage where we're recieving VC funding, we're able to take it towards expansion to a global scale," he said
"In the next few months, we'll be coming up with our first ever demo applications and prototype applications and also integrating more services in the region, certainly we'll be starting to enter our technology into areas such as Singapore, Malaysia, in the Asean region, and in the future, the world," he added.
Currently a team of four developers and three creative professionals, the firm is expanding.
"We're in a position now to lure top talent into joining our team in an industry that we foresee is going to explode in the coming year. Really exciting times," he said.
MeSixty is the second Icentre incubatee which received VC funding from Accel-X Pte Ltd, followingInfindo Technologies last year.
Accel-X is a $15-$20 million firm that runs a business angel scheme, which allows young firms access to funds to finance their expansion.
The agreement was signed between Keeran Janin and Accel-X managing partner Edmund Yong, and was witnessed by BEDB CEO Vincent Cheong who was the guest of honour at the event.
